A young man who graduated with the best result his university has ever seen has di£d in an accident after being unable to secure a job.
The young man's story was narrated by writer Obinna Udenwe.
According to him, the young man was not only the best graduating student in his set, but he was also the best ever in years and the school gave him another award to recognise that six years after his convocation.
In spite of his academic achievements, the university refused to give him a job when he applied to become a lecturer. After years of trying to secure a job, he purchased a motorcycle and has now di£d in an accident.
Sharing the man's story, Obinna Udenwe wrote: "This morning, I heard something very troubling, the kind that makes the ear bleed.
"My cousin just told me a sad story, of a young man who graduated with them in 2015 from the Federal College of Agriculture, Isiagu.
"This Ezza boy, Augustine Elem was the overall best student of their set. Then 6 years after, at the school’s convocation, he was invited back and awarded the overall best student after six consecutive convocations.
"He asked that the school retain him as a lecturer and made all attempts for this to happen but they did not.
"He used the money he got from the award to pursue a post graduate and a Masters at the University of Agriculture, Umudike, yet, he couldn’t get into academics in this school that already knew his potentials. So, to survive, he started a POS business at Obubra Junction.
"Two weeks ago, he used money realized from his business to purchase a motorcycle and called my cousin to share the news.
"A week ago, on his way to town to collect money for his POS business, he was involved in an accident and di£d subsequently at the hospital.
"Pause to think about that a moment. Someone who wasn’t just a best graduating student of his set but the overall best after 6 consecutive convocations couldn’t be retained by the same institution that knew his potentials and capabilities, yet these people give jobs to nonentities, to lecturers who cannot solve simple problems and equations, every single year.
"This should give our government a reason to critically look into our reward system. In developed climes, government and private institutions fight over the acquisition of best brains from various schools. In fact, private companies and government agencies start monitoring students early enough with the aim to quickly recruit them at graduation.
"In Nigeria, our best brains drive okada and run PoS businesses or loiter the streets while the dumbest of us with connections litter the service. A shame indeed.
"According to my cousin, what everyone who knew Augustine Elem is mourning isn’t just his d£ath, but the brain that has been lost.
